First impressions | This tool is priced at $39.95 and has some great reviews, including a great one from Tucows. So I had high expectations as I installed it. The downloaded file was a huge 26mb so the software looked pretty meaty from the outset. | ||||||

What I liked |
Separate registry optimizer
This is a great addition. As well as the usual registry scan, there's also a neat built-in registry optimizer. It uses technology only available with this tool to compact and speed up the registry. Kind of like putting your registry on the treadmill to get toned up. Separate bar for current section and total progress This is something I wish more registry tools did. It's really great to have an overall progress bar so you know how long is left to run on the scan. You can also see which entry is currently being worked on and loads of details about what's being fixed and what's happening. Some great advanced settings If you're one of those people who likes lots of advanced settings and being totally in control of your software, you'll love XP Repair Pro. You can alter everything from the opacity of the software (so you can see through it!) to how the software will perform backups. Really good stuff here. Built in registry editor If you're experienced with the registry, or want to do something specific, there's a handy registry editor right here on the software. It comes with a quickly accessible search, edit and a few other tools you'll find helpful. |

What I didn't like |
Not the easiest tool to use
I don't mean this in a bad way. This tool will clearly appeal to the slightly more computer savvy / tech minded user. There's loads of extra controls you can use, as well as plenty of stats and information to pour over. The large friendly buttons you see in other tools are replaced with a Windows explorer style interface. No quick backups The only way you can backup here is to use the System Restore option. It's not especially difficult to set a system restore point, but it would also have been a good idea to be able to perform quick backups - as most of the other tools I've tested allow you to do. But it would have been better to have a quick undo option - as many competing products do. Required the .net Framework If you don't know what this is, it's a huge program you have to download before you can install this software. It's easy enough to do, and the installer does it all for you, but the file is over 24 megabytes and even on broadband takes a while to download. |

The verdict |
XP Repair Pro is a tool some users will absolutely adore. If you want a lot of control over your registry, and you've got some experience with computers then I'd definitely download the trial of this tool and check it out. It has a lot to offer.
For me, it's not the best tool you can get for your money. I found it a little tricky to use - but then I am an average sort of computer user. And I really like the registry optimizer section of the software too. |
