Registry Mechanic Review    By Tom Armstrong

Registry Mechanic is a solid registry cleaner with a built in defrag tool and system optimizer. It's missing a few important features though, and misses too many errors.

What does this software do? Registry Mechanic scans your Windows Registry for problems that are lurking there. It then repairs, removes and heals anything that could be dangerous. It also creates full backups, which can be easily restored.
Buying notes The company who are handling the payment and delivery of this product are Regnow. I've bought so much stuff from them over the years I wouldn't like to calculate how much I've spent! Easy purchase and immediate download. Very reliable.
First impressions After a quick installation process you can fire up Registry Mechanic and set it to work on your computer. Although there's some advanced options, you can just click on Scan and the software does the hard work for you. The interface is slick and clean and there's really no need to go into the help files.

What I liked Very ease to use

This was the first program I've ever used to scan / repair my registry. As someone who isn't technical minded (I like PCs to work without the fuss!) I thought this software was super-easy to use. You just click Start Scan and that's about it.

One-click optimizer

Another cool feature is the ability to optimize your system. This is a simple button you click on and then Registry Mechanic will do some tweaking to make sure you're running at top performance.

Compact your registry

There's another quick-to-use tool here that compacts your registry. This removes all the blank space created when it deletes items. I ran a scan and it knocked about 2.5 megabytes from the registry, optimizing it's performance a further 7%. Sweet!

Smart update

Keeping the software up-to-date is a simple (and thankfully FREE) process. You just click on the Smart Update button and Registry Mechanic updates itself. When I tried this feature, it didn't even need to restart the software.

It's fast!

I like software that runs quickly. Registry Mechanic starts up quickly and runs all of it's scans in super-fast time. If only my other applications ran this smoothly and quickly.

Very simple automatic backups

It's important with a good registry scanner to have a way to backup your changes. This is taken care of very simply with Registry Mechanic with automatic backups. I was able to restore my registry changes from months ago using this tool.
What I didn't like Under performed on tests

After running a large number of tests, I found that this tool didn't perform as well as some of it's competitors at finding and repairing real errors. While it wasn't the worst offender by a long shot, the better tools found around 30% more problems.

No startup manager

I think one of the things a registry tool should offer is a way to edit the programs that fire up when Windows starts. After all, these processes are also stored in the registry. Registry Mechanic doesn't offer this facility.

No way to schedule scans

Scheduling scans isn't something everyone will desperately want with a registry cleaner, but if it's something you're looking for you'll need to go elsewhere. While you can set Registry Mechanic to scan when Windows starts up, you can't schedule it to scan at other times.

Can't set a system restore point

The internal registry backups this tool makes are great. But it would have been nice to be able to set a system restore point from within the software too.

Strengths
  • Really easy to use
  • Safe and creates backups before changing anything
  • Built in performance optimizer
  • Tool to compact the registry
  • Smart update keeps you up to date
  • Really fast at scanning, repairing and backing up
Weaknesses
  • Problem finding as many errors as some other tools
  • No startup manager
  • Can't schedule a registry scan
  • No quick way to set a system restore point
The verdict Registry Mechanic is a slick entry into the Registry repair software market. And there's a lot to like about it. It's won a surprising number of awards online, and you can see why. It's easy to use and quickly fixes a good number of errors in your computer's registry.

The only thing stopping it from getting a higher score was the lack of a few extras like a startup manager and the system restore point. And the fact that the higher scoring tools were more ruthless at digging out errors.
