Reg Sweep Review    By Tom Armstrong

Reg Sweep is a fantastic looking tool but it's got some serious problems. The most notable being the low number of errors it reports and fixes.

Product Name Reg Sweep
System Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista
Price $29.95 / About £19.08
What does this software do? Reg Sweep scans your computer's registry for various known problems such as corrupt file paths, invalid shortcuts and many more. It then corrects these errors, improving your system's performance and stability.
Buying notes The company who are handling the payment and delivery of this product are ClickBank. I've spent way more than I should have done with these guys over the years. And they're safe, reliable and I'd trust them with my own Grandmother (if I had one!)
First impressions Wow. Reg Sweep looks absolutely gorgeous and is the best looking registry repair tool I've bought and tested so far. Down the side you've got buttons for 'Scan', 'Settings', 'Backup' and 'Manage Startup'. Alone the top there's Live Update and the help button. This is a great, self explanatory interface.
What does it fix? • Add / Remove Programs
• Application Paths
• File Associations
• Font Files
• Help Files
• Invalid Shortcuts
• Program ID Section
• Registry Integrity
• Shared Files & Folders
• Sound Section
• Startup Programs
• System Services
• Virtual Devices

What I liked Automatic backups that are easy to restore

If you're worried about doing more harm than good, relax. Reg Sweep makes backups of your registry before each scan and stores them under the 'Backup' section. Whereas some other tools I've tested make backing up pretty tough, it's easy to do here.

Excellent reports screen

If you're curious about what it is that's being fixed on your computer, and what all these errors mean, you'll really enjoy using Reg Sweep. After the scan, you can browse and explore all the different registry entries that need fixing. I'd never realised there was so much wrong under my PC's hood.
What I didn't like Takes ages to do a scan

10cc once sang "Ooh, you'll wait a long time for me". Well, you'll be waiting a loooong time for Reg Sweep too. In the same time this tool ran, I was able to run my top tool about 3 times. Sure, you could just leave it and do something else, but really - this thing lumbers along like a Brontosaurus with a hangover.

Much lower number of errors reported

A real problem here because this tool misses loads of errors that the other ones pick up. In some tests it found only around 30% of the errors that it's competitors picked up on.

Prompts to download and install extra (paid software)

There I was, sitting scanning my PC with Reg Sweep, when this window pops up asking me if I'd like to download AdwareAlert. (Another paid product in this company's range). I've already bought this software and you're hitting me up for another purchase? I didn't like that at all.

Practically non-existent help files

I thought I'd clicked something wrong here because I couldn't find anything in the way of help files. (Beyond a couple of basic pages on how to get started). If you were a new user, looking to learn more about how the tool worked, you'd be disappointed here.

No advanced settings

I clicked the settings button in Reg Sweep a few times because I thought I must have missed something. Nope. Still no settings here. And there really aren't any to speak of. If you're an advanced user, you're not going to find anything you can alter or tweak with Reg Sweep.

No defragmentor

After testing a number of tools, maybe I've been spoilt! But I expected something more than just the ability to scan. Yes it was fast, but there were no extra tools like a defragmentor.

Sluggish to start up and shut down

This didn't really bother me at first but after a while it started to grate a bit. When you start or close the program it kind of fades in and out. It's a cool effect but it seems to take ages.

Progress bar didn't work

I tested this on a number of different computers and the little bar that tells you how much time is left looks like it's been on the booze. It was all over the place and didn't work properly. Disappointing as the rest of the presentation was good.
Strengths
  • Great looking interface that's easy to use
  • Excellent reports screen to view the problems
  • Makes backups automatically
Weaknesses
  • Takes a long time to startup, scan or close down
  • Misses lots of critical errors
  • Progress bar doesn't work
  • Tries to sell you another product when you start it
  • No advanced settings to adjust
  • No defragmentor or other extra tools
  • Poor help files
The verdict While not the worst registry cleaner on the market, there's some shortcomings with Reg Sweep that would make me want to leave it on the shelf. It looks great and is very easy to use, but the engine behind it doesn't work as well as the better tools on the market.

Look elsewhere, there's better products around for the same money - or less.
