Max Registry Cleaner Review    By Tom Armstrong

A decent tool that found a massive number of errors during our tests. And a great defragmentor. Let down by a few problems with it's design and interface though.

What does this software do? Max Registry Cleaner scans your computer's registry for a number of different problems such as corrupt files, paths and registry key problems. It then corrects the problems it finds, improving your system's performance.
Buying notes The company taking payments for this product are called RegNow. They're a massive online retailer of all kinds of software and they're great. Well, as great as someone taking money from you. I've spent loads with them over the years and never had a problem.
First impressions When you start the software up for the first time, you're confronted with a window that asks you which items you'd like to scan. This was a little off-putting and I'd imagine it would phase anyone who hadn't used registry repair software before. After selecting all it begins scanning straight away.

What I liked Found a high number of problems in my registry

I was impressed with the sheer number of invalid entries that this software uncovered.

Built in scheduler

I think this is a great feature. The scheduler lets you specify when you'd like to run your registry scans. As this isn't the fastest software, it's not a great idea to sit and watch it. So schedule it for late at night or early morning when you're not there.

Registry defrag tool

This is another nice extra that defrags and speeds up your registry after you've completed a scan. It's easy to use too. Just click the Defrag button and start it off.
What I didn't like That damn Scan selection box

For some reason that's beyond me, every time you do a scan, you have to select which problems you'd like to fix. To say this gets frustrating after the first couple of times is an understatement. Why not just remember my preferences from the last time?

Delete or cancel or... NOTHING!

After the scan, you don't get the chance to preview the problems. There's just a rather abrupt box asking if you'd like to Delete the problems or cancel. This is not a great way to do things. It's much better to see detailed information on each problem.

Pretty difficult to use

I've got to say this isn't the most friendly tool I've found. A couple of times I got backed into a screen and didn't know how to get out of it. Then I realized you had to click on the top right X box. Why not just have a nice big 'back' button?

Backup not that straight forward

Compared to other tools, the backing up and restoring of your registry just isn't that easy here. There's a couple of extra steps when you have to select all the files you want to recover. It's much easier when you see a list of registry backups listed by date and you just click 'Restore'.

Broke down after a few scans and needed re-installing

I test these tools thoroughly and, unfortunately, old Max didn't seem to keep up with the pace. I tried to run it again at a later date and it wouldn't start up. It wanted me to re-install the software again. Not a huge problem, but pretty frustrating.
Strengths
  • Finds and fixes a high number of errors
  • Built in scheduler
  • Defrag tool to speed up registry
Weaknesses
  • Annoying request box every time you scan
  • No way to preview changes before deleting
  • Difficult to use
  • Restoring from backups could be easier
  • Broke down and needed re-installing after a few uses
The verdict This tool was a disappointment. I'd read a good review on another site which just goes to show that some people are really not trying the products they're recommending. This isn't an absolutely terrible bit of software, but there's so much better out there. Avoid this one and save your money.
