Error Doctor Review    By Tom Armstrong

Error Doctor is a very basic reg cleaner, even for the greenest of computer users. Although it's easy to use, it's too light on features & cleaning power. There's better tools available.

First impressions After a speedy and easy download and installation process, the Error Doctor came a calling at my house. Well, OK my PC. And the interface looks interesting. Actually it looks more like it should be part of a video game: there's a huge bug in the top right corner of the graphically impressive interface. It's very easy to see what you have to do here. There's simple buttons for 'Scan' and 'Remove' (errors).

What I liked Very ease to use

Users new to the registry software world will find little here that will confuse them. The software is very intuitive and has clearly been designed with novice computer users in mind. There's very simple buttons and a basic menu at the top of the panel.

Built in scheduler

Error Doctor takes care of you registry maintenance for you with it's built in task scheduler. You can set it to run every day, or every week for example. Again, very easy to use.

Automatic backups of any changes you make

When you hit the 'Remove Bugs and Errors' in Error Doctor, it will create a backup to fall back on should anything go wrong. Restoring from these backups is also a very straight forward affair.

Free support - from within the software

There's a simple 'support' button in Error doctor that takes you to their support service online (as you're connected to the web when you click on it). You can ask for help on any registry problems you're having here.
What I didn't like Perhaps too basic

Although no-one wants a tool that's difficult to use, Error Doctor does looks and feels a little simplistic. There's not much you can do with Error Doctor other than a really basic registry scan and repair run.

No startup manager

Although Error Doctor does work at correcting corrupt entries in the startup section of your registry, it doesn't offer any way to edit the startup programs. There's no other extras here either. No registry defrag or anything else to optimize your PC.

Very basic settings and scheduler

The settings screen has two options and that's it. Anyone other than a very novice user is soon going to be climbing the walls looking for a little more depth. The scheduler suffers from being dumbed down too, offering simple choices like 'every day'. There's no options for choosing more sophisticated timing.

Where's the help files?

There were a few things I wanted to find out about Error Doctor that could have easily been answered looking in the help files. Unbelievably, there were none. Although you don't always need them with software, it's always important to have help files.

Very strange support

I had to ask a question in the process of writing this review: what operating system does the software work on. But the answer I got back didn't make any sense. It wasn't anything related to my simple question. I re-asked the question (maybe I wrote something in the wrong way) and got the same reply. It was kind of like talking to a computer that didn't speak very good English. Not good.

Strengths
  • Very easy to use
  • Built in scheduler
  • Makes automatic backups
  • Free tech support
Weaknesses
  • Feels very basic and is light on features
  • No startup manager
  • Very basic settings
  • Scheduler leaves a lot to be desired
  • No help files
  • Poor email support
The verdict Although not the most terrible bit of software created, Error Doctor feels insubstantial compared to some of it's peers. It's likely to leave all but the most novice of user wanting more. The visuals are appealing, but it doesn't look or feel like a serious registry cleaning application.

There's much better on the market for less money. So, if your computer needs a health check, you might not want to give this Doctor a call.
